The talk regarding the lockout of the officials continues.? It?s still unknown whether the NFLPA will take action.

But the NFLPA hasn?t ruled out doing so.

NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith, in an extensive interview with SI.com, was asked about the possibility that players will withhold services due to concerns regarding safety risks associated with the replacement officials.

?In America it is the employer?s obligation to provide as safe a working environment as possible,? Smith told Jim Trotter of SI.com.? ?We believe that if the National Football League fails in that obligation we reserve the right to seek any relief that we believe is appropriate.? The NFL has chosen to prevent the very officials that they have trained, championed and cultivated for decades to be on the field to protect players and ? by their own admission ? further our goal of enhanced safety.? That is absurd on its face.?

To some, the possibility of a player strike may seem absurd on its face.? We explained last month that it could happen, despite the presence of a no strike/no lockout provision in the CBA.? Still, if the players wouldn?t risk a paycheck in order to get a better overall deal with the owners in 2011, they won?t risk paychecks over safety concerns that, based on their chronic resistance to rules changes and fines/suspensions levied by the league office, don?t concern them.

Still, the NFLPA can do other things, from making the case for the lockout to end to filing a grievance or other legal action aimed at forcing the league to allow the locked-out officials to return to work.? It sounds like something tangible could be coming.

?We?ve been very public in saying that we believe on a scale of 1-10 the use of replacement referees in the preseason is a 12,? Smith said.? ?That goes up to a 16 now that you?re entering into the regular season.?

Smith identified three ?fundamental facts that are inescapable? in support of his views:? ?One, the players and the league have made tremendous strides in trying to make the game safer over the last three years. The second fact is, at the players? urging, the National Football League last year gave the referees more power to spot and deal with a concussed or injured player. The third inescapable fact is, over the last 20 years the league has done everything to maintain an experienced referee corps.?

He pointed out that, typically, rookie officials are introduced only with a team of experienced officials., and that the locked-out officials have nearly 1,500 years of experience.? So why would the NFL use entire teams of rookie officials?? ?The only conclusion that I have,? Smith said, ?is that the league cares more about money than it does about the experience of the referees as a vehicle to increase player safety.?

Smith also called upon owners to be involved in the process.

?The owners have invested in the players, and each and every owner loves what keeps the National Football League unique among sports.? And it?s two things, on any given Sunday a team could win; and every game matters,? Smith said.? ?So my question to the owners is, because those two things are true, why would they ever want to leave the game in critical moments in the hands of referees that they ordinarily would never hire?? I mean, If these referees were so credible, how come they hadn?t hired them before the lockout??

We?ve disagreed with Smith at certain times in the past.? It?s very hard to disagree with him on this point.

Using new officials creates a risk of errors that will affect the outcomes of games.? With the margin between making the playoffs and not making the playoffs at times razor thin and with recent history showing us that any team that gets in to the postseason can run the table, a bad, game-altering call in Week One could, in a roundabout way, have an effect on the outcome of the season.

The two sides simply don?t seem to be far enough apart to justify that risk.? The problem is that there?s no one who can clunk the parties? heads together, Moe Howard-style, and force them to find a middle ground.

Until that happens, the two sides will continue to line up like the boys and the girls on opposite walls at the junior high dance, waiting for each other to make the first move.

iPad Mini Cases Show iPod Touch-Inspired Design

While we might have to wait until October for the iPad Mini, we?re still seeing a few more cases for the rumored device show up online.

According to MacRumors, the latest leaked cases show off the latest rumored design for the 7.85-inch iOS tablet. The cases show a tablet with a thin bezel on the ?left? and ?right? of the screen (assuming the tablet is in portrait mode), and a thicker bezel on the ?top? and ?bottom? around the home button and FaceTime camera.

The new cases also show the same design we saw in our engineering samples last month. They show the smaller dock connector on the bottom of the device flanked by two speaker grilles instead of the one grille in the current iPad. The cases also show a rear-facing camera with no flash to speak of, just like the iPad and iPod touch.

We?ll likely have to wait until October to see the official announcement of the iPad Mini, but evidence certainly suggests that it is coming soon. The tablet will likely cost somewhere between the iPod touch which starts at $180 and the iPad which starts at $499. A price of around $249 or $299 for the base model seems likely.

Unfortunately we don?t know much about the iPad Mini, aside from the size, design, and the rumored 4G LTE. Information about the device?s processor, specific details about a camera ? if there is one, and specifics about the device?s storage space options remain unclear.

We do expect the device, at the very least, to be running Apple?s iOS 6 operating system which will be released this fall.

SEAL who wrote bin Laden raid book identified

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Navy SEAL who wrote an account of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden under a pseudonym was identified Thursday as Matt Bissonnette, who retired from the Navy last summer.

Bissonnette was first identified by Fox News. One current and one former U.S. military official confirmed the name, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss military personnel matters.

The book, "No Easy Day," is scheduled to be released Sept. 11, with the author listed under the pseudonym of Mark Owen. Penguin Group (USA)'s Dutton imprint, the publisher, asked news organizations Thursday to withhold his identity.

"Sharing the true story of his personal experience in 'No Easy Day' is a courageous act in the face of obvious risks to his personal security," Dutton spokeswoman Christine Ball said in a statement. "That personal security is the sole reason the book is being published under a pseudonym."

Bissonnette also changed the names of the other SEALs in the account, the publisher says.

Efforts to locate Bissonnette for comment were unsuccessful.

Special Operations Command spokesman Col. Tim Nye said the retired SEAL could be endangered by being identified, which could also expose those active-duty SEALs the author worked with in the killing of bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan last year.

The book and the author's name come out amid debate over the possible damage to U.S. national security by leaks in the media about top secret operations.

Yet the book also comes at a time when special operations forces are prominently featured in the media as never before, even as the elite organizations demand secrecy.

A rash of new books trumpet special operators' exploits. For example, "American Sniper," a best-seller by recently retired SEAL Chris Kyle, details his 150-plus kills of insurgents from 1999 to 2009.

A handful of special operations advocacy groups have sprung up decrying leaks, but they identify themselves by name as former members of some of the elite units, in an online campaign video that slams President Barack Obama for releasing details of the bin Laden raid.

One of the advocacy groups is run by retired Navy SEAL Ryan Zinke, who prominently mentions his time years ago at SEAL Team 6, the top secret unit that carried out the bin Laden raid.

Even Special Operations Command made an exception to its normal reticence with the media when it signed off on the movie "Act of Valor," which followed active duty SEALs carrying out training exercises that were turned into what looked like real action scenes for the film.

The author of "No Easy Day" is slated to appear in shadow in promotional interviews for the book, meant to conceal his identity. CBS News' anchor Scott Pelley said Thursday evening that "60 Minutes" has interviewed the author and will air the interview on Sept. 9.

The book is already listed as one of the top 10 books on Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com.

Beyond the risk he faces now that his identity is known, he could also face legal trouble if the Pentagon determines that he disclosed classified information in the account.

U.S. military and intelligence officials say they do not believe the book has been read or cleared by the Defense Department. The Pentagon reviews publications by military members ? both active duty and retired ? to make sure that no classified material is revealed.

One Turkish soldier killed in fresh PKK attacks

DIYARBAKIR, Turkey (Reuters) - Kurdish militants attacked two army posts in southeast Turkey on Thursday, killing at least one soldier, officials said, hours after Ankara said it had killed 16 guerrillas in the area following a raid on a military convoy.

The clashes underscore a growing cycle of violence in the remote, mountainous province of Hakkari bordering Iraq and Iran - a development which Turkish officials and analysts are linking to the conflict in nearby Syria.

Security officials told Reuters fighters from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) had launched simultaneous raids on two military posts in Hakkari's Semdinli district, the scene of a wave of recent clashes between rebels and government forces.

At least one soldier had been killed in the attacks, which were still continuing, the officials said, without giving further details.

The attacks came only hours after government officials said Turkish troops had killed 16 PKK fighters in an offensive targeting militants who killed five soldiers and wounded seven on Wednesday in a bomb attack on their convoy in Semdinli.

Officials said the army had sent in troop reinforcements and helicopter gunships after Wednesday's attack.

In a sign of Ankara's concern over the violence in the mainly Kurdish region, the commander of the military's land forces arrived in Hakkari on Thursday. General Hayri Kivrikoglu said the army's operations would continue "without pause".

"We always stand by our people. Our people should not worry. The Turkish armed forces will continue in its duty to protect the security of the people and the region," Kivrikoglu was quoted as saying on state media Anatolian's website.

It was not immediately clear whether Kivrikoglu was still in Hakkari when the militants launched their latest attacks.

More than 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict between the PKK and Turkish forces since the militants launched their insurgency 28 years ago with the aim of carving out a separate state in mainly Kurdish southeastern Turkey.

The PKK has since scaled back its demands to political autonomy and more cultural rights for Turkey's estimated 14 million ethnic Kurds.

Since June last year, nearly 800 people have died in the conflict, including about 500 PKK fighters, more than 200 security personnel and about 85 civilians, according to estimates by think-tank International Crisis Group.

The conflict is focused in the mountainous region bordering Iraq and Iran, but the PKK has also carried out attacks in Turkish cities. Officials blamed it for a car bombing on Monday which killed nine people in the city of Gaziantep, near Turkey's southeastern border with Syria.

The PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, has denied involvement in that attack.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has accused Syrian President Bashar al-Assad of backing PKK fighters and has warned of military intervention in Syria if the group uses Syrian territory to threaten Turkey.

No-till could help maintain crop yields despite climate change

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? Reducing tillage for some Central Great Plains crops could help conserve water and reduce losses caused by climate change, according to studies at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Research leader Laj Ahuja and others at the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Agricultural Systems Research Unit at Fort Collins, Colo., superimposed climate projections onto 15 to 17 years of field data to see how future crop yields might be affected. ARS is USDA's chief intramural scientific research agency, and this work supports the USDA priority of responding to climate change.

The field data was collected at the ARS Central Great Plains Research Station in Akron, Colo. The projections included an increase in equivalent atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels from 380 parts per million by volume (ppmv) in 2005 to 550 ppmv in 2050. The projections also included a 5-degree Fahrenheit increase in summer temperatures in Colorado from 2005 to 2050. The ARS scientists used these projections to calculate a linear increase of CO₂ and temperature from 2050 to 2100.

Ahuja's team used the Root Zone Water Quality Model (version 2) for crop rotations of wheat-fallow, wheat-corn-fallow, and wheat-corn-millet to see how yields might be affected in the future. They simulated different combinations of three climate change projections: rising CO₂ levels, rising temperatures, and a shift in precipitation from late spring and sum?mer to fall and winter. They ran the model with the projected climate for each of the 15 to 17 years of field crop data for each cropping system.

When the researchers used all three climate factors to generate yield projections from 2005 to 2100, the yield estimates for the three cropping systems dropped over time. Declines in corn and millet yields were more significant than declines in wheat yields.

Ahuja also simulated earlier planting dates and no-till management to see if either change reduced yield losses, but only the no-till option helped. In the wheat-fallow rotation with no tillage, wheat yields were higher than with conventional tillage through 2075. But by 2100, when summer temperatures had increased by 8 degrees F, even the no-till yield advantage was lost.

The results from this work were published in Climatic Change in 2012.

In a report issued Monday, the German central bank questioned the wisdom of having the European Central Bank buy bonds to help the struggling European economies. It stressed that such purchases could carry "substantial risks."

Earlier this month, stocks rallied after ECB President Mario Draghi said the bank might buy government bonds of struggling European countries to help lower their borrowing costs.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who has resisted easing pressure on struggling countries, also heartened investors with comments last week that officials would do everything possible to save the euro.

In the U.S., Lowe's, the world's No. 2 home improvement store, missed earnings expectations Monday. Revenue at stores open at least a year dipped 0.4 percent, and the company cut its outlook for the year. The stock fell more than 3 percent.

Stocks have been inching up for six weeks. On Friday, both the Dow and the S&P closed just below four-year highs.

Other stocks moving sharply early Monday included health insurer Aetna, which announced it would buy Coventry Health Care for $5.7 billion as the insurance industry realigns itself to better navigate the health care overhaul.

Aetna rose $1.52, or 4 percent, to $39.56. Coventry climbed $6.57, or 19 percent, to $41.51.

The deal follows the $4.46 billion buyout last month of another insurer by WellPoint Inc., and last year's acquisition worth nearly $4 billion by Cigna of HealthSpring as it grabbed for a share of Medicare revenue.

As I argued in late last year (see The Economics of Polarization, Asia Times Online, November 1, 2011), the cost of supporting bloated payrolls and pension schemes for government unions at the state and local level forced these governments to squeeze more out of floundering homeowners. Homeowners now pay in aggregate almost as much in taxes as in mortgage interest. Taxes used to be a third of mortgage interest. The increased tax burden has kept home prices low.

For the median American family, that translates into a 40% reduction in wealth.

The impact on home equity, moreover, isn?t the worst of it. The home-price bubble brought with it business opportunities for Americans with modest skills: construction, real estate sales, mortgage broking, retail, and a host of other services. With the boom in home prices came a wave of entrepreneurship comparable to the first response to the Ronald Reagan tax reforms of the 1980s.

A simple but robust measure of entrepreneurship is the change in the total number of corporate tax forms filed in the United States each year. That reflects the number of businesses actually operating and making money. During the Reagan years, the number of corporations filing taxes rose by 5% a year, reflecting the great wave of entrepreneurship driven by a happy confluence of economics and demographics.

Reagan cut the top tax rate from 70% to 40%, an enormous spur to individual initiative. The baby boomers were just entering their 30s, starting families, and eager to succeed. And American households were flush with capital. As Exhibit 2 shows, homeowners? equity had more than doubled during the five years before the 1980 election.

During the George W Bush years, this index of entrepreneurship rose sharply; corporations paying taxes grew by more than 4% a year in 2005 and 2006 before plunging into negative numbers in 2008 after the financial crisis. Although data are not available for the past four years, anecdotal evidence suggests that the number of corporations in the US has continued to shrink.

As Exhibit 4 shows, not only the number of corporations operating, but the net income per corporation, soared during the 2000s. The graph shows ?C? corporations (in which income does not flow through directly to the owners) and ?S? corporations (where income flows directly to the owners) separately. ?S? corporations overwhelmingly reflect small business.

Now the baby boomers are entering their 60s after losing nearly half their wealth, in the least business-friendly environment the country has had since the 1970s. Rising taxes at the state and local level, and unprecedented deficits at the federal level, worry the middle class, with good reason.

Americans are concerned about the lack of opportunity, but they are even more concerned about the risk that they may lose what little they have left. It?s not enough to promote entrepreneurship, as Romney does so enthusiastically. It?s also important to talk about deficits. That is the thrust of the Tea Party, a classic middle-class creditors? party responding to the well-justified fear of higher taxes and inflation.

The punditeska claims that Ryan?s presence on the Republican ticket opens Romney to the charge that his prospective vice president wants to cut Medicare (Ryan had suggested a private option as an alternative to Medicare for Americans reaching the age of 65 a decade from now, which is quite different).

But Romney is betting that Americans are smart enough to understand that the federal government can?t keep borrowing one out of every three dollars it spends. The Ryan choice highlights the divide between the Democratic Party?s core base among government employees, and the Republicans? appeal to middle-class taxpayers.

If that?s what the election is about, arithmetic tells us that Romney should win.

Virginia fugitive Wesley Thomason arrested in Mexico 12 years later

A Virginia man charged with sex crimes involving underage girls is back in custody after spending 12 years on the lam, MyFoxDC.com reports.

Wesley Thomason was 27 in 2000 when he was arrested, accused of enticing underage girls with illegal drugs to have consensual sex with him, said Fairfax County Police Officer Bud Walker, according to the station.

Thomason was jailed without bond in the case at the county?s adult detention center, but was later released pending trial and fled to Mexico.

?"Earlier this year, the United States Marshals Service developed some type of information about where he was living in Mexico, provided that to Mexican law enforcement, and it was the Mexican authorities that finally captured him," Walker said.

Now 39 years old, Thomason is back in jail in Fairfax County.

Defiant strikers get ultimatum after S.Africa mine shootings

Platinum giant Lonmin on Sunday ordered employees back to work at a South African mine where police killed 34 people, but miners remained defiant as a week of national mourning was declared.

The London-listed company issued an ultimatum to workers to end a wildcat strike by Monday after the worst episode of police violence since the apartheid era, which President Jacob Zuma said will be officially mourned for seven days.

Lonmin said the call to staff was "a last opportunity to return to work" at its shut-down Marikana mine where union rivalry escalated into a police crackdown and more bloodshed on Thursday after 10 people died just days earlier.

"Employees could therefore be dismissed if they fail to heed the final ultimatum," warned the world's number three platinum producer.

But miners who first downed tools at the Marikana mine on August 10 pledged to press on with their wage demands, and called the order to return to work "an insult" to colleagues who were gunned down by police.

"Expecting us to go back is like an insult. Many of our friends and colleagues are dead, then they expect us to resume work. Never," said worker Zachariah Mbewu.

"Some are in prison and hospitals. Tomorrow we are going back to the mountain (protest site), not underground, unless management gives us what we want."

Lonmin's Monday deadline for miners to return to work will coincide with the start of a week-long national mourning announced Sunday by Zuma.

Flags will be lowered to half mast and an official day for nationwide memorial services held on Thursday.

"The nation is in shock and in pain. We must this week reflect on the sanctity of human life and the right to life as enshrined in the Constitution of the republic," said Zuma.

"We must avoid fingerpointing and recrimination. We must unite against violence from whatever quarter. We must reaffirm our belief in peace, stability and order and in building a caring society free of crime and violence," he said.

The fiery former leader of the ruling party's youth wing, Julius Malema, fanned workers' anger Saturday with a speech attacking Zuma, whom he wants voted out at the African National Congress's year-end party elections.

"President Zuma decided over the massacre of our people, he must step down," Malema, who was booted out of the ANC in April for fomenting divisions in its ranks, told a crowd.

The violence at the mine stems from a conflict between the powerful National Union of Mineworkers and the upstart Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), which is calling for a tripling of wages.

Thursday's crackdown left 34 dead, 78 wounded and 259 detained, and boosted the death toll to 44 after the 10 earlier deaths which included two police officers.

The violent police action has drawn parallels to the brutality seen under apartheid and sparked debate over the living conditions faced by miners, who voiced indignation at Lonmin's ultimatum.

"Are they also going to fire the ones who are in hospitals and lying in mortuaries?" asked Thapelo Modima.

"It is better to be fired anyway because we are suffering, our lives won't change. Lonmin does not care about our well-being, they have so far refused to hear us out, only sending police to kill us."

Workers say they are waiting to hear from mine bosses, whose ultimatum Sunday was an extension of a previous order to return.

"Tomorrow we won't return to work unless they listen to our demands of salary increases," said underground supervisor Fezile Magxaba.

"People have died, we are angry. If we return it will be like they died in vain," he said while doing his laundry at a communal tap.

Churches in poor settlements surrounding the mine held services on Sunday, with relatives milling outside the hospital to check if their loved ones had been admitted there, or to find out if they had been arrested or worse were among the dead.

Police have claimed self-defence and several probes have been launched, including Zuma announcing a judicial commission of inquiry.

A team of his ministers will also head to Marikana on Monday to "coordinate and lead all support" to grieving families.
