Lot Land Financing? - Zillow Mortgage Advice

I am quite certain that this has been addressed before, and I will not try to be to long winded, but I would like to explain what I am wanting to do.

I am on my second marriage and have been for 3 years now.? My first wife passed from cancer a month after we closed on our first home...the home I am still in.? I am wanting to take this home and sell it or put it in a rental status for my step son.? (24 years old, recent college graduate, and 740 credit score).

Anyways, we now live in Texas and I am wanting to transfer my job to Colorado in the next couple of years. During this time, my wife and I are wanting to purchase .75 to 2 acres of land with the desire to build our retirement log home on. I am going to colorado again in the next month to look at some land in the Woodland Park Colorado region.

What my question is how to best do this process.? Do I go ahead and get the land now, pay on it for a year or two and then have our house built on it, or do I possibly get it as a bundle and get one mortgage.

I am a bit lost in how to do this, any assistance is greatly appreciated.
